Seismic shockwaves ripple through Kabul and Islamabad.

KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan 11: In a seismic event that rattled northeastern Afghanistan on Thursday, a powerful earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale shook buildings from the Afghan capital Kabul to Islamabad in neighboring Pakistan. The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be in the Jurm district of the Afghan province of Badakhshan, situated in the mountainous Hindu Kush region, as indicated by the US Geological Survey.

The earthquake struck just before 2:00 p.m. local time (9:30 GMT) and had ripple effects felt in Kabul, approximately 300 kilometers (180 miles) away from Jurm. Despite the intensity of the quake, there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Afghanistan, positioned near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, is no stranger to seismic activity. The Hindu Kush mountain range, in particular, experiences frequent earthquakes. The region's vulnerability to such geological events poses an ongoing concern for residents and authorities.

The tremors from this event were felt in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), situated at a considerable distance from the epicenter in the Hindu Kush region.

While the full extent of the impact is still being assessed, these incidents serve as stark reminders of the seismic vulnerability of the region. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely for any potential developments.
