LONDON, Jan 14: The Princess of Wales made an emotional return to the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, where she was treated for cancer, marking her first solo public appearance in over a year. Kate, 43, chose this significant location to personally thank the medical team for their exceptional care, support, and kindness during her treatment.
Royal insiders shared that the Princess aimed to offer encouragement to those currently undergoing therapy. Kate had completed her chemotherapy last summer following a diagnosis in February and a two-week stay at The London Clinic due to abdominal surgery. During her visit, she interacted with both medical professionals and cancer patients undergoing treatment.
Upon arriving at the Chelsea location, Kate entered through the main entrance, which was a change from her previous private visits. She reflected on the experience, saying, "I was just saying, coming in the front entrance here, having made so many quiet, private visits, actually it's quite nice," according to the Mirror.
Throughout her visit, Kate was seen warmly greeting patients, offering a comforting "very nice to meet you" and asking about their treatment journeys. She spoke with one patient who had just begun their treatment, asking, "When did you first start treatment? Oh today? How are you finding it?"
The Duchess also discussed the emotional toll cancer diagnoses can take on families. One woman commended Kate for managing her children "amazingly well" during her own battle with the illness. Kate emphasized the importance of staying positive, addressing how lingering side effects from treatment can continue to affect daily life even after therapy ends. Before leaving, Kate shared heartfelt hugs and greetings with the staff who had come out to see her.
This visit coincided with Kate’s official role alongside Prince William as joint Royal Patron of the Royal Marsden, a renowned cancer research center known for its work in advancing cancer treatment globally. Kensington Palace stated that Kate is eager to support The Marsden’s ongoing efforts in cancer research, treatment, and care, and is keen to learn more about how their work will benefit patients in the future.
Following a break from royal duties, Kate demonstrated her resilience by attending notable public events such as King Charles' official birthday, Trooping the Colour, and joining her sister Pippa and Princess Charlotte at Wimbledon last June. As she continues to resume royal engagements, Kensington Palace emphasized that today's visit is deeply personal for Kate. A palace spokesperson said, "The Princess wanted to make the journey to both show her gratitude to the incredible team, but also highlight the world-leading care and treatment the Marsden provides."
