KUWAIT CITY, May 30: The Municipal Council member Architect Sherifa Al- Shalfan submitted a proposal to study and allocate bus rapid transit (BRT) routes, and connect them with the public and mass transportation network in coordination with the Public Authority for Roads and Transportation (PART) and the Ministry of Interior for the organization and success of the project.

In the preamble of her proposal, she referred to Article 21 of the Municipal Law No. 33/2016 in clause 4, which stipulates the role of the Municipal Council in deciding projects and their locations. Article 22 also stipulates that the council may not issue its decisions on the issues presented to it without them being studied by the executive branch. In her proposal, Al-Shalfan highlighted the work of the executive body on several studies aimed at developing the public transportation system in Kuwait, but none of them have been implemented recently. She explained that these studies included many means of transportation, such as developing the bus rapid transit (BRT) system.

This would provide a cost-effective, rapid implementation and efficiency solution to address land transportation challenges through the use of dedicated lanes that ensure faster and more effective service compared to other public transportation systems. Al-Shalfan concluded her proposal by highlighting the worsening problem of traffic congestion and the role of effective public transportation in contributing to its solution. She indicated the state’s tendency to support the railway project, which requires linking it with an effective transportation network.
