PORTUGAL, Jan 14: Portugal's renowned footballer, Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, often identified as CR7, carries a name with a surprising origin — partly inspired by former US President Ronald Reagan. Despite Ronaldo's birth coinciding with Reagan's presidency, the moniker was chosen because Reagan was the favorite actor of Ronaldo's father.
In a conversation with GQ, Ronaldo disclosed, "My parents named me after him because they both liked this name and thought it sounded strong." As history would reveal, the forward would indeed embody strength, gaining fame for his robust physique and dominant presence on the football field.
The 40th President of the United States, Reagan, enjoyed a prolific acting career spanning nearly three decades, featuring in TV shows and movies like Kings Row (1942), Storm Warning (1951), and The Killers (1964).
Despite Reagan transitioning to a political role and being in his second presidential term by Ronaldo's birth on February 5, 1985, the footballer's father, José Dinis Aveiro, may have made a prescient decision in naming his son.
Now playing for Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr since January 2023, Ronaldo mentioned, "I know that my father admired him." Given Ronaldo's stature as a global football icon, there's speculation about his potential forays into acting or politics post-retirement.
Several football legends, such as George Weah, Andriy Shevchenko, and Romario, have successfully ventured into politics after their playing careers. Ronaldo, often considered the greatest of all time (GOAT), might yet follow in the footsteps of the man who influenced his name, showcasing more parallels in the future.
