KUWAIT CITY, Dec 21: Hervé Renard affirmed that Saudi Arabia's national team is determined to compete for the Khaleeji Zain 26 title, emphasizing the importance of the tournament as a standalone objective rather than a preparation phase for upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Speaking at a press conference, Renard expressed gratitude to Kuwait for its warm hospitality and wished all participating teams success.

“We begin the tournament today with a challenging match against Bahrain,” Renard stated. “Our ambition is to win the title, and a strong start is essential.”

Reflecting on his absence from the Saudi team in recent months, Renard stressed his focus on the tournament and called on Saudi fans to attend and support their team. “Their presence motivates the players to perform at their best,” he added. Renard also praised his squad, expressing confidence in their ability to delight Saudi supporters. He highlighted the need to strengthen team spirit, given the current circumstances differ significantly from previous ones.

Renard extended special thanks to injured player Salem Al-Dawsari for joining the national team and supporting his teammates, wishing him a speedy recovery. Addressing the absence of Saudi players active in foreign leagues, he acknowledged their importance but expressed confidence in the remaining squad’s potential to deliver high-level performances.

Abdul-Ilah Al-Malki, a key player for Saudi Arabia, reiterated the team's collective goal of clinching the title. “Facing Bahrain in our opening Group Two match won’t be easy,” he admitted, “but the ambition and determination of the players to reach the final and secure the precious cup will drive us forward in every match.”

Bahrain's head coach, Croatian Dragan Talajic, expressed readiness to face Saudi Arabia in today’s (Sunday) opening round of the championship. Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Talajic noted, “This tournament is entirely different from the World Cup qualifiers. It’s a combined competition, and we need to approach every match to win.”

He praised Renard's capabilities, acknowledging the French coach’s ability to guide Saudi Arabia to deliver strong performances. Talajic also reflected on Bahrain’s triumph in the Gulf 24 Cup in 2019, highlighting the uniqueness of the current tournament.

“This is a new challenge, and we aim to showcase beautiful football and make a strong opening statement,” Talajic said. He also confirmed the absence of player Ali Haram due to injury but expressed hope for his quick return.

Bahrain's star player Mohammed Marhoon emphasized the Gulf Cup's significance as a prestigious combined tournament. “We aim to represent Bahrain with distinction,” he said, extending gratitude to the Kuwait Club for their support. “I hope to be an exemplary ambassador for Bahraini football here in Kuwait.”

As the Khaleeji  Zain 26 kicks off, both teams gear up for an intense competition, showcasing their determination to start strong and secure their place as top contenders.
