KUWAIT CITY, Jan 14: Brigadier General Mohammad Diadan Al-Ajmi, Chairman of the Traffic Week Activities Committee and Director of Coordination and Follow-up at the General Traffic Department, has revealed in a 2024 report that a total of 1,926,320 various types of traffic citations were issued including speeding violations. During a traffic awareness lecture held Monday morning at the Public Institution for Social Security (PIFSS) building, attended by acting PIFSS Director General Ahmed Hamed Al-Thunayan,
Director General of the General Traffic Department Brigadier General Jamal Al-Foudari, Brigadier General Al-Ajmi, and Traffic Awareness Department Assistant Director Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Bouhassan, noted that road accidents in 2024 led to 284 deaths among people of various nationalities, primarily attributed to speeding and negligence while driving. Brigadier General Al-Ajmi also pointed out that 152,367 citations were issued for not wearing seat belts and 179,530 and 27,163 citations for causing loud noises from vehicles. He also mentioned that 8,455 vehicles were impounded and 3,139 individuals of various nationalities were detained. He urged the citizens and residents to adhere to traffic laws to protect their lives and the lives of all road users – motorists and pedestrians.
For his part, Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Bouhassan, Assistant Director of the Traffic Awareness Department, emphasized that the strict enforcement of traffic laws is not aimed at collecting fines but to raise awareness and ensuring compliance with traffic laws to reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries, often caused by speed and lack of attention. Lieutenant Colonel Bouhassan also highlighted that recently, approximately 252 cameras were installed on public roads to monitor seat belt violations and mobile phone usage. These cameras operate using artificial intelligence, and additional Point-to-Point cameras have been set up to measure distance and speed between cameras, enabling authorities to capture speeding violations even if the driver slows down before reaching the next camera.
