Selena Gomez on mental health: Why her bedroom became a place of darkness
Selena Gomez

LOS ANGELES, Oct 17: Selena Gomez has opened up about how her mental health challenges have affected her relationship with her home, particularly her bedroom. During the inaugural virtual Mental Fitness Summit hosted by Wondermind on October 10, coinciding with World Mental Health Day, the Only Murders in the Building star revealed, "I spent too much time in my bedroom that I actually don't even sleep in my bedroom anymore, because I associate it with such a really dark time."

The 32-year-old actress shared her experiences with anxiety, admitting, "Being anxious is so debilitating sometimes. I didn't want to leave my bed for years, and part of it was I wasn't doing the work. You have to believe in yourself and do the work that will truly enlighten you a little bit."

Gomez recounted a restless night just before the summit, stating, "As recent as last night, I was in bed and I couldn't fall asleep until about four, and it was just because my mind was simply racing. And I just kept saying over and over again, 'This will pass. Just let it go through your body and it'll go away,' and of course, eventually, I fell asleep."

Having previously discussed her battles with anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder, Selena emphasized the importance of talking about her struggles with close friends, her therapist, and her mother, Mandy Teefey, with whom she co-founded Wondermind. "I still have days where I need my mom, like, my mommy," she admitted. "And then there are also moments for me where I just allow myself to be vulnerable and cry and just talk it out."

The former Disney Channel star highlighted the liberation she found in sharing her mental health journey, explaining, "I tend to isolate. There are moments, of course, where you need to be on your own and feel things. I didn't accept help; I just wouldn't. And I found complete freedom in sharing everything I've been walking through because I know that other people feel that way too."

Gomez added, "I hope no one ever looks at me and thinks, 'Oh, her life is perfect.' Because that's just simply not true. I'm very grateful and I have a very blessed life. But we're all human, and feelings are very real. I think it definitely needs to be talked about, and we need to educate people more about it."

Other celebrities have also spoken out about mental health issues. Candace Cameron Bure reflected on her journey with depression, stating, "It's very difficult to speak out about it, even to your most trusted people." Billie Eilish emphasized the importance of patience in mental health recovery, while Katy Perry candidly discussed the stress of navigating life during the pandemic.

Kendall Jenner spoke about her anxiety on Good Morning America, and Dwayne Johnson highlighted the importance of opening up about mental health for men. Prince Harry discussed the stigma around seeking help, while Taraji P. Henson stressed the necessity of professional support and founded a foundation to reduce stigma in the African American community.

Several other celebrities, including Lili Reinhart, Kristen Bell, Chrissy Teigen, Cara Delevingne, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Zendaya, and Lady Gaga, have shared their own mental health journeys, emphasizing the importance of seeking help and the reality of living with mental health issues.

Through her candid sharing, Selena Gomez continues to inspire others to address their mental health challenges and seek support.
