Selena Gomez shares emotional journey of accepting her infertility

LOS ANGELES, Sept 9: Selena Gomez has candidly shared her plans for future motherhood and her relationship with Benny Blanco in a recent interview with Vanity Fair. The actress and singer, 32, revealed that due to medical issues, she is unable to carry her own children.

In the October issue of Vanity Fair, published on Monday, September 9, Gomez discussed her medical challenges, including lupus and a bipolar disorder diagnosis. “I haven’t ever said this…but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” Gomez stated. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while…”

Gomez has previously disclosed her struggles with lupus, diagnosed in 2015, and her bipolar disorder, which she publicly revealed in April 2020 during an episode of Miley Cyrus' Instagram Live show, Bright Minded. Despite these challenges, Gomez expressed optimism about other paths to motherhood. “I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me,” she said.

Gomez noted that while her journey to motherhood might look different, she remains excited. “It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people,” she added. “I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”

Gomez had previously touched on her motherhood aspirations in November 2022, expressing her sadness over the impact of her bipolar medication on her ability to carry a pregnancy. She hoped to become a mother through alternative means and remains hopeful about her future as a parent. “However I’m meant to have them, I will,” she said at the time.

According to a WebMD article, bipolar disorder medications can lead to birth issues such as neural tube defects and developmental delays. Some physicians recommend continuing medication during pregnancy to manage bipolar symptoms.

In the Vanity Fair interview, Gomez also spoke about her relationship with Benny Blanco, confirming him as her boyfriend in December 2023. “I’ve never been loved this way...He’s just been a light. A complete light in my life. He’s my best friend. I love telling him everything,” she said.

Gomez responded humorously to Blanco’s marriage proposal mention on The Howard Stern Show, stating, “After the interview, I was dying laughing. Like, ‘Anything else you wanted to put out there?’ ”

Gomez also revealed how cooking with Blanco has grounded her. “I love fresh foods and stuff. I’m starting to get into that kind of because of my boyfriend,” she shared. “Just being in the garden and picking food that I’m going to be able to cook with. It sounds so silly and minuscule but the older you get the more that you realize that it’s OK to just be simple and have simplicity.”
