LOS ANGELES, Nov 6: Selena Gomez has once again shut down social media body shamers, revealing a health condition in the process. The Only Murders in the Building star and founder of Rare Beauty responded to comments about her weight on TikTok, disclosing that she lives with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Her disclosure came shortly after attending the red carpet for the premiere of her film Emilia Pérez at the American French Film Festival in Hollywood on October 29.
At the event, Gomez, 32, wore a black, body-hugging gown. However, some TikTok users, in a now-deleted post, commented on her posing with her hands across her stomach, claiming she was hiding her body, according to TMZ. The actress, who has previously confronted body shamers, responded to the video by saying, “This makes me sick.”
In her reply, Gomez shared her SIBO diagnosis, explaining in several screenshots that the condition flares up. She emphasized, “I don’t care that I don’t look like a sick figure. I don’t have that body. End of story.” She also added, “No I am NOT a victim. I'm just human.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, SIBO occurs when there is an abnormal increase in the bacterial population in the small intestine, including bacteria typically not found there. This condition often results from circumstances such as surgery or disease that slow the movement of food and waste through the digestive tract. Gomez had previously shared in 2017 that she had undergone a kidney transplant due to lupus nephritis, where lupus, an autoimmune disease, caused her kidneys to fail. Symptoms of SIBO can include bloating, abdominal pain, and nausea.
Gomez has been open about her physical and mental health struggles, including her ongoing battle with lupus, and her experiences with bipolar disorder, anxiety, and depression. In a September interview with Vanity Fair, she revealed that due to her health conditions, she is unable to carry a child. She shared that she would likely pursue surrogacy or adoption when she decides to start a family. “That was something I had to grieve for a while,” she admitted.
Earlier this year, in February 2023, Gomez addressed her body and weight issues again, acknowledging that the medication she takes to manage lupus causes her to retain water. "Not a model. Never gonna be," she said in a TikTok live, while reminding her followers of their own beauty. "I just want people to know that you’re beautiful and you’re wonderful, and yeah, we have days where maybe we feel like s—, but I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself," she said, adding that her medications are essential and help her manage her health.
