Syrian jailed 10 years, fined KD20K in e-crime, impersonation lawsuit

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 21: The Court of Cassation has issued a decisive ruling in a case involving cybercrime and impersonation, sentencing a Syrian man to 10 years in prison and imposing a fine of 20,000 dinars. The conviction follows his involvement in hacking a government website, impersonating an employee of the Consumer Protection Department, and unlawfully seizing 15,000 dinars from a female citizen’s bank account. The incident came to light when the accused exploited technology to infiltrate a government website and assumed the identity of officials responsible for consumer protection.

Using the messaging application WhatsApp, he contacted the citizen, fraudulently claiming to represent the Ministry of Commerce. Through this deceit, he managed to transfer 15,000 dinars from the victim’s bank account to his own. The Public Prosecution presented evidence proving the actions of the accused, including his hacking of a government platform and impersonation of a public employee to commit financial fraud. This ruling highlights the stringent measures taken by Kuwait’s judiciary to combat cybercrimes and protect public trust in governmental systems.
