LONDON, Dec 23: The teenager responsible for leaking 90 clips of the highly anticipated video game Grand Theft Auto 6 last year has been sentenced to an indefinite term in a secure medical facility, as reported by the BBC. Arion Kurtaj, now 18, will only be released based on medical professionals' assessment of his no-longer-dangerous status. The sentencing, which occurred on Thursday, detailed Kurtaj's history of violent behavior while in custody, involving numerous instances of injury and property damage.
The court learned that Kurtaj, associated with the international cybercrime group Lapsus$, exhibited a persistent desire to return to cybercrime, as revealed in a mental health review. Before his arrest in September 2022, Kurtaj was on bail for hacking Nvidia and BT/EE, and he had been placed under police protection at a hotel. Despite having his computer confiscated, Kurtaj managed to infiltrate Rockstar Games, the developer of GTA VI, using unconventional tools such as an Amazon Firestick, a hotel TV, and a mobile phone. Following this incident, he was re-arrested but was considered unfit to stand trial due to his autism.
During the sentencing hearings, Kurtaj's legal team argued that the success of the GTA VI trailer, which garnered 128 million views on YouTube in its first four days, indicated that the hacking did not harm Rockstar Games. However, the judge highlighted that Kurtaj's actions, along with his prior cybercrimes committed with Lapsus$, had real consequences for individuals and companies. According to the BBC, Rockstar Games reported that the GTA VI hack incurred a cost of $5 million and required thousands of employee work hours.
