Travel rebound sparks aviation boom

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 10: A recent report from the Central Statistical Bureau highlighted significant developments in air traffic, and consistent growth in aircraft movements, passenger numbers, and airport capacity. The data also reflected an increase in the number of direct global destinations, which reflects the sector’s progress and its ability to keep pace with the annual growth in both passengers and aircraft. According to the report, the number of aircraft arriving and departing has surged by 29.17 percent over the past decade. In 2014, approximately 83,443 aircraft were recorded, while by 2023, that number had risen to 117,822.

The profound impact of the COVID- 19 pandemic on the aviation sector is reflected in the air traffic plummeting during the 2020-2021 period. The number of aircraft movements dropped to just 30,215 in 2020 and 35,215 in 2021 due to the global health crisis. The statistics revealed that Kuwait International Airport has seen a significant rise in passenger capacity, accommodating 7 million passengers annually in 2015, and reaching 14 million passengers in 2023, which is an increase of 1.5 million passengers beyond its original capacity.
