We celebrate alongside the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Amir of Kuwait, as well as the Government and people of Kuwait, the founding of the modern Kuwaiti state. We also commemorate the 34th anniversary of Kuwait’s liberation. These two days symbolize pivotal moments in Kuwait’s history, highlighting the sacrifices and resilience of the Kuwaiti people in defending their pride, freedom, and sovereignty. As the Ambassador of Turkiye, I am deeply honored to witness and be part of this auspicious celebration and commemoration.
The saying, “A friend in need is a friend indeed” perfectly captures the long-standing fraternal ties between Turkiye and Kuwait. This bond has been proven time and again over more than six decades of diplomatic relations. The anniversary of Kuwait’s liberation serves as a powerful reminder that the international community stands firmly by the rule of law. This was clearly demonstrated during the liberation of Kuwait, in which Turkiye played a pivotal role in supporting Kuwait’s freedom from the Iraqi occupation in 1991. Turkiye stood firmly on the side of international legitimacy, strongly endorsing United Nations resolutions that called for the withdrawal of Iraqi forces. From the very beginning of the crisis, Ankara took a decisive stance in support of Kuwait’s sovereignty, actively participating in the imposition of international sanctions on the Iraqi regime of the time.
In addition, Turkiye took a bold economic step by shutting down the Iraqi oil pipeline that passed through its territory, further pressuring the Iraqi government. During Operation Desert Storm, Turkiye provided military facilitation to the allied forces through its bases and reinforced its troops along the Iraqi border, effectively diverting Iraqi military resources and preventing reinforcements from reaching Kuwait. Following Kuwait’s liberation, Turkiye continued its unwavering support for Kuwait across various domains, strengthening the bonds of brotherhood between the two nations.
This commitment has laid the foundation for ongoing cooperation in security, stability, and development. I am also pleased to note that these fraternal ties were elevated to the level of strategic partnership during H.H. Amir Sheikh Mishal’s visit to Turkiye last year, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of our diplomatic relations. Turkiye and Kuwait serve as anchors of stability in the region, and the growing cooperation between our countries benefits not only our respective nations but also the broader region. As Kuwait continues its path toward prosperity and stability, Turkiye will remain a steadfast ally of Kuwait. Long live the State of Kuwait, and may the fraternal ties between Turkiye and Kuwait continue to flourish!
