WASHINGTON, Sep 19: The United States has approved a possible $2.68 billion foreign military sale to Ukraine aimed at upgrading its air defense capabilities, along with related equipment and support services, the State Department said Friday.
According to a notification sent to Congress, Ukraine requested S-300 clone missiles, GAM-67 missiles, range-extended air defense laser-guided rocket missile systems, launcher modification kits and counter-drone radars.
The proposed package also includes erectable mast trailers, spare parts, software, and engineering and logistics support.
If finalized, the deal would be financed through European contributions and US Foreign Military Financing appropriated under the previous administration, the State Department said. The funds would count as a US contribution to the Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund through a 1:1 reimbursement arrangement.
The State Department said the proposed sale would support US foreign policy and national security objectives by strengthening the security of a partner country in Europe.
It added that the package would improve Ukraine's ability to respond to current and future threats while "not alter[ing] the basic military balance in the region."
The department said the proposed sale would not require the deployment of additional US personnel to Ukraine.
