These hormones help regulate appetite, and medications derived from them, like semaglutide (Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro), have shown promising results in supporting weight reduction. While these drugs represent a significant breakthrough, they also come with potential health-related challenges.
GLP-1-based medications work by making individuals feel less hungry, which leads to reduced food intake and weight loss. Clinical trials have shown that these medications are highly effective, with some patients losing up to 20% of their body weight. This dramatic weight reduction marks a substantial advancement in treating obesity, particularly for those who have struggled to achieve lasting results through diet and exercise alone.
However, it’s essential to note that not all of the weight loss achieved with GLP-1 drugs comes from fat reduction. Research has shown that up to one-third of the weight lost consists of non-fat mass, which includes muscle tissue and bone mass—critical components of overall health.
Muscle and bone play vital roles in maintaining both physical and metabolic health. Muscle mass is essential for regulating blood sugar levels, which helps prevent conditions such as type 2 diabetes. When muscle mass decreases, blood sugar control can be impaired, increasing the risk of complications like nerve damage, cardiovascular disease, and poor circulation.
