LOS ANGELES, Oct 24, (Agencies): A wax museum in Paris, inspired by London's Madame Tussauds, is set to redo the wax statue of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson following criticism that it misrepresented the actor's skin color.
The Musée Grévin recently unveiled its wax figure of the professional wrestler-turned-actor, which quickly garnered widespread ridicule on social media, including comments from Dwayne Johnson himself. Critics accused the museum of "whitewashing" the statue.
The controversy led to various social media comments, with one user remarking, "They whitewashed The Rock," and another comparing the figure to the advertising character Mr. Clean. An Instagram account referred to the statue as "melanin deficient."
Dwayne Johnson, who is of Samoan and Black Canadian descent, joined the criticism on Sunday by sharing a video on his Instagram page. In the video, comedian James Andre Jefferson Jr expressed feeling "low-key offended" by the statue, humorously suggesting it made The Rock look like he works at H&R Block and likening him to royalty. Dwayne Johnson wrote in his post, "For the record, I'm going to have my team reach out to our friends at Grevin Museum in Paris, France, so we can work on 'updating' my wax figure here with some important details and improvements, starting with my skin color. And next time I'm in Paris, I'll stop in and have a drink with myself."
In response, the Musée Grévin, which houses over 250 celebrity statues, acknowledged the feedback on Instagram and mentioned that its artists are "working on improving" the waxwork. They added, "Your feedback is always valuable to us."
When the statue of Dwayne Johnson was first unveiled, the museum explained on its website that it had presented various challenges to sculptor Stéphane Barret, who had to rely solely on photos and videos for reference. The museum also detailed the extensive effort put into recreating The Rock's distinctive Samoan tattoos and the care taken to ensure the statue's eyes did not appear too dark and maintained a warm appearance.
