Why Kate Middleton waited to share her cancer diagnosis

LONDON, Feb 24: Jason Knauf, a former royal aide to Prince William and Kate Middleton, has opened up about his time working with the Royal Family in a revealing new interview. Knauf discussed a range of topics, from Prince William’s future role as king to the difficult decisions the Prince and Princess of Wales faced after Kate’s cancer diagnosis.

In early 2024, a wave of conspiracy theories began to circulate regarding the Princess of Wales' health, with many speculating about her absence from public life. The theories ran rampant in the absence of an official statement from Kensington Palace. However, in a candid interview with 60 Minutes Australia, Knauf shed light on why the royal couple chose not to immediately address the situation publicly.

"They didn't want to say yet that she had cancer because they hadn’t told the children and they were still working through how to tell the children," Knauf explained, shedding light on the emotional and logistical challenges the family faced.

Reflecting on the emotional toll, Knauf shared how Prince William reacted to the news of Kate’s diagnosis. "It was awful, absolutely awful," he said. "It's the lowest I've ever seen him." The former aide revealed that just weeks after learning about Kate's health condition, Prince William received devastating news that his father, Prince Charles, had also been diagnosed with cancer. "Within a couple of weeks, if you're Prince William, you find out that both your wife and your father have cancer. I couldn't believe it," Knauf added.

Knauf, who worked closely with the couple for seven years, also touched upon the flood of online speculation and conspiracy theories that emerged as the Princess of Wales stepped back from public engagements. "The problem was that all this crazy conspiracy theory stuff kicked off in the background online," he remarked, alluding to the confusion and distress caused by the lack of clarity surrounding Kate's health.

In the interview, Knauf also shared his thoughts on Prince William's future as king, offering a glimpse into what the monarchy could look like under his reign. "Just what you see is what you get," Knauf said, suggesting that William’s leadership style will be genuine and straightforward. He also acknowledged the evolving nature of the royal family and their responsibilities, noting, “With every generation, the Royal Family has to reinvent the role for the generation that they serve,” a transition that Prince William has already begun.

As the Royal Family navigates these challenging times, Knauf’s interview provides rare insight into the private struggles of the couple and offers a glimpse into the future of the monarchy under Prince William’s eventual reign.
