NEW YORK, Feb 8: Many people are accustomed to sleeping with two pillows, but Missouri-based physical therapist Sammy Spiegel is urging people to reconsider this habit due to its potential impact on posture and spinal health.
In a TikTok video that has garnered nearly 400,000 views, Spiegel advises against using two pillows for head support during sleep. She explains that consistent poor posture, such as hunching over a desk throughout the day, can lead to a curve in the upper back, known as a "dowager’s hump," which affects nearly 40% of adults over 55 years old.
According to Spiegel, the practice of using two pillows—referred to as "two-pillow syndrome"—can exacerbate poor posture. She also cautioned against mattresses that mold to the body's shape, as they can reinforce the bad postures acquired during the day, making it difficult to reverse them.
To help maintain proper alignment, Spiegel recommends using a flat pillow or a rolled-up towel behind the neck to encourage the spine and neck to straighten while sleeping.
Other sleep specialists commonly suggest using only one pillow behind the head, as this allows the spine and neck to stay in a more natural alignment, which can reduce the risk of discomfort or pain.
However, for those suffering from conditions like sleep apnea or acid reflux, using two pillows to elevate the head and upper body may be beneficial, as it can help keep airways open and prevent stomach acid from rising.
Additionally, for optimal sleep posture, experts often recommend placing a pillow under the knees for back sleepers, and between the knees for side sleepers, to prevent curling into a fetal position.
Finally, Spiegel cautions against stomach sleeping, which flattens the spine's natural curve and puts unnecessary pressure on muscles and joints. Switching sleeping positions can help improve spinal health and overall comfort.
