KUWAIT CITY, March 5: Twitter users attributing a report to the Kuwait Embassy in the Philippines said the real cost of recruiting a Filipino maid, including an air ticket, works out to between KD 280 and KD 300, while the domestic labor recruitment offices in Kuwait charge KD 1,250 do the same job for. This is sufficient proof that the offices supplying domestic help from the Philippines are exploiting the citizens. Some say the citizens themselves are to be blamed for this situation. According to reports some Kuwaitis recruit Filipino maids and then allow them to work in cafés and take KD 500 from them each year. This has contributed to the soaring the prices of hiring Filipino domestic workers through these offices. A Filipina, identified only as S.T., said she is working for a confectionery shop with consent from her sponsor and she pays him KD 450 every year. She pointed out she earns a monthly salary of KD 140 and works from 09:00 am to 10:00 pm. She added her work in the shop is much better than working in a house. She wished the Interior Ministry or any other governmental body directly involved in the employment of domestic workers to help this category of people get their rights.
